Very interesting that the A Card is incomplete, since the last picture, which is taken from the Imperial War Museum site and has had the watermark (lower right hand corner) removed, shows it at the Ordnance Depot at Malta, in May 1963. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205098877 The caption, should anyone be interested states ”To keep army vehicles held in RAOC Vehicle Parks in first class condition a team of maintenance men and drivers is used. At Ta'Qali Vehicle Sub Depot Royal Army Ordnance Corps Malta, Sergeant M. Bryant, the NCO-in-Charge of Park Movement directs his team of men in their continuous duties. He is seen here speaking to Mr Zammit, a driver who is working on a Saracen Armoured Personnel Carrier.“

Now there’s a result. Thanks for taking the time Wally. From my end, will go through the 1960 Malta pics, and see if it pops up again somewhere else. Annoyingly, the same set of pics doesn’t show this vehicle again, so will have to trawl through a few hundred pics just for 1960 alone on what is a very slow website. Once again Wally, thank you for taking the time. Your archive is something I would love to get my hands on. It’s priceless! And of course, no B cards available in the RLC archive…….ho hum.

Hi Wally. In fact, when I spoke about the "collective wisdom", I did have you in mind, so thanks a million for answering. Are there any records at all of what was trialed, how many, and if there's anything regarding this one, which obviously spent some time in Malta. A VRN would be the dream answer, or maybe a report (or an extract thereof), but as I said in my original post, any information is welcome!

It's not something I've ever come across, so would love to see what the collective wisdom of the forum comes up with. This was an exercise in Malta in 1960 (St George's bay, close to where the RM were garrisoned), and I had to look twice before I realised that it wasn't an Austin Champ I was looking at, but an M38A1 (or Willys MD). This is from a set of pics, one of many thousands uploaded recently on the IWM website, and looks like an exercise showing what the RM could do, for what looks like the visiting General Officer Commanding Malta Garrison. One hell of a result! Well done, finding the missing bits to complete the armoured look. Getting the original panels back would be quite a turn up for the books. Keeping my fingers crossed that they’re the ones that came off the vehicle, although I’m sure you won’t mind much if they’re not!

Why won’t it work? You’ve built a tank FFS! Keep going, you are an inspiration. Now this really is stuff to emulate. Sheer determination, hard work, know how…….just keep doing what you’ve been doing all along, and if you don’t manage to give yourself a pat on the back when you’re done, send me your address, and I’ll fly over, pat you on the back, drool on your tank, and then take to your favourite pub, and buy you as many beers as you can drink.

Just a thought, but wouldn’t the trailer wheel nuts be the same as the towing vehicle’s wheel nuts? Have you tried looking at a wheel brace for a GMC CCKW, this being a frequent tow vehicle? The braces do look remarkably similar, and with, if I understand correctly, GMC wheel nuts being 1.5” (38.1mm) a GMC brace seems to be the correct one- https://jeepest.com/gb/wheels-hubs-cckw352-353/3914-wrench-wheel-nut-gmc.html post script- i am guessing that you measured a non rusty unpainted unbashed nut to get the 40mm and used a vernier rather than a tape measure!
